The Solar System

Summary

In the years since the humanity’s first attempts at interplanetary travel, mankind has spread itself across the entire solar system, colonizing the majority of planets and moons. Despite human presence on most of the solar system’s objects, the bulk of humanity is still concentrated into a few densely populated areas. Earth itself has had it’s population swell into the tens of billions, which people in cities pressing up against each other in the overly cramped conditions. Many inhabitants of Earth long to escape the planet and venture out as colonists, but the Earth’s population continues to grow faster than colonization of the solar system. Mars and the four largest moons of Jupiter boast the largest populations outside of Earth, but are still minuscule compared to the home of humanity.

Mercury was first colonized by the Japanese Space Agency, and is used only for mining purposes. It maintains a small population, the majority of which are mining operators, and the rest being support staff. It is run entirely by the mining corporations involved, although those living there are considered to be Japanese citizens.

The only people currently living on Venus are construction and survey workers who are working on the terraforming and livability of Venus. Due to it’s near Earth size and gravity Venus is highly desired location for human settlements, but the harsh conditions of the planet have made it unviable for colonization so far. Workers on Venus are citizens of Earth on contractual work.

The vast majority of humans still live on Earth, due to rampant population growth that outpaces the rate of emigration to the other planets of the solar system. Most of the population is concentrated in China and India, which have since fused (along with most of Asia, but not including Japan) into the Chinese Federation; Japan maintains it’s independence and is recognized as a world economic power. Many of the European nations also banded together to create the European Confederation, while the Americas and Australia more loosely coalesced into the Union of the Americas and Australia. International corporations also hold immense amounts of power on Earth, with many corporations matching the economic status of minor states.

Mars was initially colonized by the Chinese space program, although when the Americas and the European Space Agency realized that they were being completely outpaced by China they devoted a huge amount of resources to matching China’s colonization efforts. China had already exported a vast number of citizens to Mars however, and the other nations of Earth were never able to catch up.

In the year 2234 Mars declared it’s independence from the various factions on Earth that had previously treated it as a colony. China had been using Mars as a dumping ground to get rid of excess population, and 2nd and 3rd generation Martians disliked this policy (even though they arrived because of it) because the massive amounts of immigrants overwhelmed the burgeoning Martian culture. After declaring independence Mars put a number of restrictions on immigration, and the Chinese Federations policy of shipping citizens over to Mars is great numbers was arrested, much to the anger of the Chinese government back on Earth.

Extensive terraforming efforts have also been undergone on Mars to make the atmosphere breathable and to form liquid water on Mars’s surface. The atmosphere of Mars is now warm enough to walk outside in (although warm clothing is recommended since it still quite cold), and the air is breathable if a CO2 scrubber mask is worn of if the lungs are genetically modified to tolerate Martian air (as most of the medium class and upwards of Mars have done).

The asteroid belt is the dangerous frontier of the solar system. Population in the asteroid belt began with corporations shipping out people to work multi-year shifts in mining duties, however most of those who were willing to take jobs in such brutal and harsh conditions were those with absolutely no job prospects back on Earth, due usually to criminal records or immense poverty in their home area. Because of this, many individuals who were shipped out to the asteroid belts elected to not return to Earth, but instead went rogue, commandeering vessels and engaging in piracy. The asteroid belt is now home to a mix of legitimately run mining operations and pirate/smuggler strongholds. Mining operations are required to maintain powerful military and security services to safeguard their goods and employees, and ships passing between the inner and outer planets require extensive security details to guard against piracy.

The four largest moons of Jupiter (Gannymede, Callisto, Io and Europa) contain the vast majority of the Jovian system’s population. After the successful colonization of Mars, the idea of the solar system as a new frontier of civilization began to appeal to the people of Earth. The idea of a Jovian Confederacy was eventually established: colonists would use the Jovian moons as staging bases to collect valuable gas from Jupiter’s atmosphere, and with the financial windfall that provided would turn the Jovian moons into what they hoped would become a new Utopia, free from the history and oppression of Earth.

The Jovian Confederation is made up of numerous colonies scattered across the four large moons and many of the smaller moons, each being governed autonomously in a huge variety of government types (many experimental). The Confederacy maintains a small central government based out of the largest colony on Gannymede, which oversees matters which affect the entire Jovian system, but mainly stays out of the way of the individual colonies. A central police force is employed to guarantee the most basic of human rights across the colonies, but the charter of rights for each colony remains separate.

One of the main financial institutions of the Jovian system is gas mining. Trawlers skim the upper levels of Jupiter’s atmosphere, collecting valuable gas to be shipped out to the rest of the solar system. Many Jovians take shifts operating trawlers for a few years before returning to their colony to live off of their earnings for another few years. A very small amount of Jovians maintain a constant presence on trawler crews, and have even genetically modified themselves for the duty.

The Saturnian System (Titan)

Titan was the second body in the solar system (after Mars) to be the target of colonization, due mainly to the discovery of active life on the moon. Though the life found consisted of micro-organisms and a few very primitive (by earth standards) multi-cellular organisms, the idea of extraterrestrial life meant that scientists began to flock to Titan to engage in research. Since then Titan has grown into a large colony with many citizens aside from the original science teams, and a flourishing culture of its own. The greatest issue facing Titan today is the desire of the populace to expand and consume Titan’s ample natural resources versus the conservationists fervent desire to leave the ecosystems of the planet entirely untouched, so as to observe the growth and development of Titan’s native life.

The moons of the Uranian system are populated almost entirely by academics, scientists and researches (the remaining population being support workers for the people involved in the science industries present). Colonization first began with researchers wanting to investigate the outer planets, and eventually evolved into the system being the location for some of the Solar System’s most prestigious universities and laboratories. Many of the inner planets’ finest scientific minds prefer the freedom from society that the outer gas giants provide. The system’ economic viability stems from the export of scientific research and engineering discoveries.

The Neptunian System (Triton)

99.9% of the colonists living on Triton are stationed on it’s largest moon, Triton, and the vast majority of people on Triton at any given time are of Japanese citizenship. After seeing the successes of Martian, Jovian and Titanian colonization, the Japanese government decided to launch an ambitious project to set up a colony of its own in space. The moon Triton was chosen because it was the largest remaining untouched moon in the solar system, and colonization of a world so far out in the system would demonstrate Japanese superiority in terraforming and habitat technology. Triton is early on in it’s development, but massive amounts of resources are being put into it’s continued colonization.

The second frontier of the Solar System, the trans-neptunian region is populated mainly by wealthy private citizens and enterprizes looking to get as far as possible from any semblance of law. The dwarf planets at the edge of the solar system fall under the jurisdiction of none of the Solar System’s governments, and due to their location on the outside of the system, experience no through traffic. What happens out on the edge of the system is largely unknown to the rest of the human populace.
